Anchor point: Aviation
Aviation
The aviation sector accounts for over 4% of anthropogenic CO₂ emissions, and remains one of the sectors with the fastest-growing greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, air travel remains strongly correlated with income level: just 1% of the world’s population accounts for more than 50% of the CO2 emissions from commercial aviation.
When the Global Solidarity Levies Task Force was launched at COP28 by France, Kenya and Barbados, it was tasked with examining options for international levies on carbon-intensive and/ or undertaxed sectors like aviation.
