Usafiri wa Anga
In line with the polluter pays principle, the aviation sector was identified as one where a small and wealthy minority cause the vast majority of environmental harm.
Aviation accounts for over 2.5% of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, contributing to around 4% of global warming to date, and yet only 10% of the world’s population even flies each year.
In addition to being carbon intensive, this sector has also been critically undertaxed. Across the G20, the average carbon price for jet fuel is €9 per tonne of CO2 compared to €68 for petrol and €79 for diesel. In general, international aviation fuel is not taxed at all.
By focusing on premium flyers—those with the financial means to decide travel based on destination and not cost—our work ensures a fair system through which those who contribute to global warming equally contribute to financing solutions.
